What Is a Force Board for Climbing?
A force board is a portable strength-testing tool that measures how much pulling force a climber produces. Instead of judging a session only by feel, it gives you a number that can be repeated and compared over time.
The CRUXMETRY Force Board 300 is designed for this kind of repeatable climbing strength testing. It measures pulling force up to 300 kg at an 80 Hz sampling rate and connects by Bluetooth to compatible software for recording and reviewing tests.
What can climbers use a force board for?
The most useful applications are simple, repeatable tests. You can create a max-force baseline, compare left and right sides using the same grip and body position, or repeat a test after a training block to see whether the result changed.
The important part is not collecting as many numbers as possible. It is keeping the setup consistent enough that one result can be meaningfully compared with another.
Force board vs. guessing by feel
Training quality can change from day to day. Sleep, warm-up, fatigue, grip choice and body position can all influence how strong a session feels. A force measurement does not remove those variables, but it gives you an objective result to record alongside them.
That is why CRUXMETRY uses a simple approach: Test. Train. Retest. Establish a baseline, train without constantly changing the test, then repeat the same setup later.
What does a climbing force board measure?
Depending on the compatible app and test, force-board data can include peak force, average force, rate of force development, test duration and accumulated load. Peak force is especially useful for maximum-strength testing, while time-based metrics can add context for longer pulls or repeaters.
How should you test finger strength?
Consistency matters more than making the test complicated. Use the same edge or grip, the same side, a similar body position and the same test instructions each time. Record the conditions that matter to you and avoid comparing tests performed with completely different setups.
For a simple repeatable starting point, use the CRUXMETRY Baseline Protocol.
Is a force board only for elite climbers?
No. The value of a baseline is that you compare primarily against your own previous result. A climber does not need an elite score for measurement to be useful. The goal is to make progress easier to observe and training decisions easier to evaluate.
Portable climbing strength testing
A compact force sensor can be used in different training environments while keeping the measurement tool itself consistent. The CRUXMETRY Force Board 300 is approximately 10.2 × 7.6 × 2.5 cm and about 113 g, with USB-C charging and Bluetooth connectivity.
If you want to start measuring instead of guessing, see the CRUXMETRY Force Board 300, or read more about repeatability in our Training & Research section.
The Force Board is a training measurement tool. It is not personal protective equipment, fall protection or a medical device.
